High Stakes Feud continued this week with Daniel Negreanu and Doug Polk playing five sessions throughout Thanksgiving week. Following 5,751 hands, Polk put together a string of winning sessions to hold a lead of $595,771.64 after an upswing of over $775,000 against Negreanu.
After the first 200 hands of High Stakes Feud were played from inside the PokerGO Studio, the match progressed to WSOP.com where Polk immediately eroded the $116,500 deficit that he had incurred in the first session. The next few sessions saw Negreanu retake the lead and hold a $222,832.70 advantage over Polk after 2,965 hands.
Negreanu is also also very used to the pressure and will undoubtedly have lots of resources to improve. Still, the smart money seems to be on the side that Polk will not have lost much during his retirement. The eighth session of High Stakes Feud would see Negreanu collect the win of $24,156.82 from the 457-hand session that was lacking of major hands between the two. However, the next four sessions of play would swing the match considerably into Polk’s favor as he collected four huge wins including an eight buy-in winning session this past Saturday in session 12.
The ninth session began fairly timidly between both players before Negreanu bluffed with queen-high on the river and was picked off by Polk with top pair to see him move into a lead of roughly $35,000. However, Negreanu struck back when he flopped a set of sevens on Polk’s pocket kings to prompt a rebuy from Polk only to have Polk turn the tide on the other table when he won a roughly $110,000 pot with flush-over-flush. From there it would be Polk’s session as he won the majority of the big pots including flopping a set and improving to a rivered full house after Negreanu turned the nut straight as the session ended with Polk winning $205,521.74 after 377 hands.
Thanksgiving week began on Monday with Polk and Negreanu logging their tenth session which would inevitably be their longest at 852 hands and just over four hours. With Polk now back in the black, he immediately furthered his advantage by scooping in lots of small pots as his lead moved out to roughly $85,000. Negreanu would regain some momentum by finding a double when he called all-in on the river with two pair against Polk’s ten-high. Negreanu then secured another pot when he found value with pocket kings as he now held the lead, but it wouldn’t be for too long as Polk began his climb out of the red. Polk found a double when he rivered a full house against Negreanu’s nut straight and then continued to grind away as the session ended with Polk winning $117,624.38.
Wednesday would be the 11th session of High Stakes Feud and there would be no all-in pots between the two as the biggest pot was roughly $53,000 across the 416-hand session as Polk ended up winning $120,023.59. The 12th session played out on Saturday, and it would secure the biggest win for any player so far as Polk collected $332,178.14 in winnings over Negreanu in the 684-hand session.
Action began fairly slowly between the two until Polk made a straight on the turn against Negreanu to move out to roughly a $50,000 lead. Polk would then go runner-runner flush against Negreanu’s Broadway straight to be up roughly $110,000, before picking off Negreanu’s bluff with king-high with his own ace-high to sit with a roughly $165,000 advantage. Polk then held with top pair against Negreanu’s second pair in an all-in pot to be up roughly $210,000 before that lead was extended to roughly $270,000 when he flopped trips.
Negreanu managed to claw away at his deficit as it dropped to roughly $200,000. before a string of pots went Polk’s way including the final hand that saw Negreanu all-in with pocket queens against Polk’s pocket eights. Polk turned a straight draw and rivered his set as Negreanu immediately quit the session which saw Polk finish Thanksgiving week nearly $600,000 in the black.

In some jurisdictions, namely California, dice alone may not determine the outcome of a bet. In the game of ’Card Craps’ 24-card decks are used each consisting of ranks ace to six in all four suits. On December 27, 2013, a member of my Wizard of Vegas forum posted about seeing this side bet at the Dover Downs casino in Delaware. It pays based on how many ’completed points’ the shooter gets before rolling a seven. The shooter completes a point when he rolls it in all possible ways. For example, to complete a point of eight the shooter would need to roll a 2+6, 3+5, and 4+4. Following are the complete rules.

*The bet will be resolved when the shooter rolls a seven.
*The bet pays according to how many ’completed points’ the shooter achieves.

Repeater is a set of craps side bets I noticed at the Suncoast casino in Las Vegas on April 6, 2015. The idea is that the player must roll a given number a specified number of times before a seven. For bets on 2 to 6, the player must roll that total the same number of times as the total itself. For example, for the bet on the number five to win, the shooter must roll 5 fives before a seven. For totals of 8 to 12, the player must roll the total 14 less whatever the total is. For example, on a total of 11, the player must roll an eleven 14-11=3 times before a seven. The following is what each specific bet pays:

According to the patent application for the Repeater Bets there are some other variants, as follows:
*Variant 1: Come out rolls don’t count. In this version, the player can only lose on a ’seven out’ but any numbers rolled on a come out roll don’t help either. The patent application doesn’t specifically say that other numbers on a come out roll don’t help, but it is implied by saying that the casino may choose to let the player turn the repeater bets on and off on a come out roll. Why would any player turn them off if the player could only advance on a come out roll and not lose?
*Variant 2: The player may also bet on a 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12. The win and number of rolls required are the same as the mirror image number below seven. For example, a player must roll 6 eights on the eight bet, which pays 90 for 1.
*Variant 3: The player may also bet on a 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12. However, unlike variant 2, the player must still achieve the given number that many times to win. Information regarding these “rich Chinese businessmen” is scant, but a recent event, the €50,000 Majestic High Roller, at the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe shed a little light on these mystery players. I happened to be at the Casino Barrière for the duration of the WSOPE, and while I didn’t cover the High Roller, I was an interested observer, given the lineup. You see, while the event was open to everyone, it was put together thanks to support from Richard Yong and Paul Phua, two of the aforementioned businessmen whom you may recall from this summer’s $1 Million Big One for One Drop.
“Guys like [Richard] Yong and [Paul] Phua are accustomed to playing really big. But 50,000 euros is already huge,” said Ty Stewart, executive director of the WSOP and vice president of Caesars Interactive Entertainment, in a September interview with PokerNews when the €50,000 Majestic High Roller was announced. “We looked at the high-roller and super high-roller tournaments out there, how many distinct players each achieved, and felt that €50K would give the tournament the best chance.”

He has many businesses worldwide, his main ones being data mining and IT-related companies. Richard has participated in the highest buy-in cash games and tournaments around the world. Richard was a part of the Million Dollar Cash came in Melbourne, Australia.”
Likewise, here’s Phua’s limited WSOP bio: “Paul Phua [whose real name is Wei Seng] is a 48-year-old businessman from Asia who currently resides in Malaysia. Phua travels around the world and has competed in some of the highest buy-in tournaments and cash games. Phua was a part of the Million Dollar Cash came in Melbourne, Australia.”
Phua’s background is just as veiled, but an Oct. 20, 2008, article from macaubusiness.com offered a little more information. According to the report, Phua became a crucial piece in the casino chess came between gaming tycoons Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson. The former managed to recruit Phua, a well-respected “promoter,” from the latter, a move that helped Wynn Resort thrive in Macau.
Here’s the relevant part from that article: “The promoter used to work exclusively for Sands Macao, but is now serving rival Wynn Resort. The Malaysian junket agent received a 1.1 percent base commission on the amount of chips that his players bought in Sands Macao VIP rooms. According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post, Phua managed eight VIP tables at the Sands Shanghai Room and was responsible for 36 percent of Sands Macao’s total VIP room turnover of US$12.8 billion dollars during the first three months of this year. Wynn Macau reportedly will pay Phua a 1.2 percent base commission. Phua also works with the Australian casino Burswood, as well as Genting Highlands outside Kuala Lumpur.”
While they’re largely shrouded in mystery, one thing is clear — both Phua and Yong are loaded. In fact, while I was at the WSOPE, one of the floors told me the following when I asked how Yong made all his money: “I have no idea, but let me put it this way. That guy over there is the biggest player Caesars Palace [in Las Vegas] has ever had in its history.”
These men may largely drive the action, but the man responsible for organizing the games, at least as far as the high-stakes ones at PKC are concerned, is Winfred Yu, business director of PKC. “The Big Game is Winfred’s baby and the players call him to let him know when they will play,” AJ Brock, the Chief Operations Officer at PKC, told pokerportal.asia in an interview.
Yu is not only an organizer of high-stakes games, he’s also a poker player and bubbled the WSOPE High Roller. “I was born in Hong Kong before immigrating to Canada with my family when I was 14. I then went to university there, taking up math and statistics. So basically, I got something that was related to poker, so that’s how I first started playing,” Yu told Asia PokerNews in a 2009 interview. “Because of the spread of poker’s popularity into places such as Sweden and Russia, I thought that China is definitely one place where the game can grow. I wanted to bring the game to the market and show that the Chinese can definitely be good at poker. Chinese people like to gamble and at the same time they are very interested in a lot of challenging and skill games. Also, a lot of them are very good at math, so that helps as well.”
Interestingly, Phua, Yong, and Yu finished first, second, and third respectively in the 20-player £100,000 buy-in High Roller tournament at Aspinall’s private gambling club in London, which took place the week before the €50,000 Majestic High Roller. Phua took home the £1,000,000 top prize, Yong collected £570,000 for second, and Yu took £300,000 for third.
Of course those three men aren’t the only rich Chinese businessmen players in action. A host of others joined them in Cannes for the €50K including Wang Qiang, Lifeng Chen, Sheng Sun, Zheng Tang and Fung Cheung, though information on these players is scant at best. Because I’ve never personally witnessed games at PKC, I can’t guarantee that all these players play the big game, but I believe it’s a safe deduction given their associations and ties to Macau that they do. Here’s some of the information floating around in cyberspace regarding these players:
*In 2011, Wang Qiang played in the Million Dollar Cash Game at the Aussie Millions and followed that up by busting on the bubble in fourth-place in that year’s $250,000 Super High Roller.
*There is a Lifeng Chen who is President of VanceInfo Technologies Inc., but whether or not this is the same man is unknown.
*Sheng Sun took third in the HKD$95,000 NLHE High Roller at the APPT Macau back on November 26, 2011 for HK$610,700 (USD $78,461). He also finished third in the HKD$1,000,000 NLHE Manila Millions Asian Poker Tour—Manila on April 20, 2012 for HKD$4,650,000 (USD $599,153).
*Zheng Tang finished runner-up in the APPT—Macau HKD$88,800 NLHE High Roller for HKD$666,700 (USD $85,854) on May 18, 2010. He also took fourth in the 2012 Macau High Stakes Challenge $258,000 NLHE Super High Roller for $2,233,531.
*Fung Cheung first caught my attention at the European Poker Tour Barcelona €50K High Roller as she was the only woman to enter that event. While she didn’t cash, Cheung did managed a 37th-place finish in the 2012 WSOPE Main Event for $27,724. Cheung is also a close friend of Phil Ivey, whom she traveled with during the WSOPE.
There’s no doubt that Macau is a hotbed for poker, and with men like Yu, Phua and Yong driving the action, it shows no sign of slowing down. The veil of anonymity the Chinese businessmen and players donned in the safe confines of the PKC are slowly being stripped away, a process that has been exacerbated as they venture outside Macau to places like Vegas, London, Australia, and Cannes in search of action. Who knows, maybe one day these players will embrace the unsolicited celebrity thrust upon them — it’d certainly be good for the game.

The high-stakes cash games in Macau that featured many of poker’s biggest names have apparently wrapped up for the time being, and now questions are swirling around the final results. While a handful of media members and staff did their best to report from inside the Starworld Casino, the higher-ups made sure to keep most of the information, including some of the players’ names, confidential.Macau Live Poker Cash Games
Speculation within the community has Tom “durrrr” Dwan winning as much as US $9 million against Chinese businessmen during the week-long action. None of the figures, however, have been confirmed.
For those who haven’t heard about the incredible action taking place at Macau, here’s a brief summary: During the final stages of the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Main Event, some of the world’s top poker players, including Dwan, Phil Ivey, and John Juanda, joined the regular high-stakes game in Macau with millions of dollars on the table.
APT tournament director Matt Savage broke the news of the game to poker forum TwoPlusTwo and, with the help of Poker King Club Marketing Director Stella Yeh, APT Chairman Tom Hall, and a few other sources inside the casino, was able to provide as much information regarding the game as possible in accordance with casino rules.
Playing short-handed with blinds as high as HKD $5,000/10,000, Juanda, Dwan, and Chau Giang were reportedly the big winners, while Ivey traveled back to the US “ahead an unknown amount,” according to Savage. Most of the pros left town after several long sessions, but Dwan accepted a challenge to play a Shanghai businessman for stakes higher than the casino had ever seen.
During the weekend, Yeh said Dwan originally bought in for around US $2.5 million against his opponent and proceeded to play heads-up No Limit Hold’em with blinds at HKD $30,000/60,000 (approximately US $4,000/$8,000). That’s around 10 times the stakes Dwan normally plays on Full Tilt Poker.Macau Poker Cash Games Making Money
Reports from the inside had Dwan losing the first session by HK $20 million (US $2.58 million), but he was able to bounce back in the second marathon session. TwoPlusTwo poster “MacauPro” was providing the forum with numbers from the game and said Dwan finished up HK $68 million (US $8.76 million) in the second heads-up session. However, Dwan’s friend and former roommate David “raptor517” Benefield responded by saying, “fwiw, Tom is still down in HU.”
Dwan supposedly won close to US $2 million in the earlier short-handed games, bringing his total winnings to an estimated US $8 million to $9 million for the trip. Depending on who you talk to, though, those numbers could be poles apart.Macau Poker Cash Games
Savage posted some final thoughts on TwoPlusTwo Monday morning: “The game broke last night after a mammoth near 48-hour session where it started 5-6 handed, was HU for a while and then others joined again at the end. Ivey and Durrrr both ended up overall for the trip and sure will be looking forward to an invite back. The biggest storyline this week will be 21-year old Jordan Spieth’s bid to win his third straight major after already capturing the title in this year’s Masters and US Open.

The simple fact that his odds to finish in the Top 5 are higher than even money automatically puts him on my list. With defending champion Rory McIlroy out of the picture due to an ankle injury, the stage is set for Spieth to shine at the birthplace of the game of golf.
Along with the fact that he has already won the first two majors, he comes into St. Andrews fresh off an impressive victory in last week’s John Deere Classic. Spieth has now finished third or better in four of his last five tournaments.
Justin Rose +350
It would be hard to leave this name off my list considering his past success on the European Tour. His best finish in 13 previous Open Championships was fourth all the way back in 1998 as a 17-year old amateur, which drains a bit of value in these odds. However, after finally breaking through with a victory in the 2013 US Open, he is always a threat in any major he plays.
Despite a very pedestrian showing in last week’s Scottish Open, overall form still adds some value to Rose’s odds with a victory in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in late April and a near miss in this year’s Memorial after losing in a playoff to finish second.
Rickie Fowler +350
I went with Fowler at +400 betting odds as one of my Top 5 plays in last month’s US Open, and he proceeded to miss the cut. I was going to sit him for this major, but last week’s thrilling victory in the Scottish Open convinced me to add him to the list. He played four steady rounds and sweated out a one-stroke victory with a final round 68.
Fowler is an all-or-nothing type player with three missed cuts in his last five PGA events, but he also won this year’s Players Championship during that stretch, which is considered by many to be golf’s fifth major. How to count cards for blackjack.
Paul Casey +650Ncaa Championship Odds
Casey made a serious run at an Open Championship title the last time it was held at St. Andrews in 2010. He ended up tied for third, which was his best finish in 12 career appearances in this event.
He just missed out on a Top-5 finish in this year’s Masters by tying for sixth, but he could only manage a 39th-place finish in the US Open. Casey’s best finish this season was second in the Travelers Championship in late June after losing to Bubba Watson in a playoff. He has a total of four Top-5 finishes this year.
